The film clearly resembles other science fiction movies. One can recognize similar scenes and script elements from iconic films such as the Back to the future trilogy and the Matrix trilogy, as well as newer ones like Looper and Nolan's own Inception and Interstellar. Nevertheless, Nolan manages to give his personal touch to the script and create something complex and entertaining.
Having also seen Inception, The Dark Knight trilogy and Interstellar, Nolan's directing and writing style are found here too. He often has ambitious ideas, can build impressive action scenes and create entertaining cinematic experiences with high production value. However, as a screenwriter, his dialogue lacks depth when writing about human relationships. It feels inauthentic, it's often unnecessarily complex, superfluous or shallow, compromising an otherwise impressive scene (e.g. SPOILER: Extremely important scene towards the end, where the character portrayed by Debicki kills the bad guy sooner than planned, knowing that this could destroy the entire planet! Regarding the performances, the lead actor (Washington) was probably the right person for the role. Whether intentionally or not, he highlighted the story instead of the character. Finally, Branagh's performance was completely flat - he didn't feel like the character but rather like putting on a performance of the role. That's why his performance was the same from beginning to end (same voice, same look) and he weakened a very important character that should have been riveting since he was basically the core of the story.
On the other hand, what was impressive and unique was the "time reversal" scenes mixed with real time. The editing, sound design and music enhanced the action scenes while the production design was equally impressive and without any (noticeable) CGI.
Overall, the film was ambitious. It had its drawbacks but it was complex and entertaining. The fact that important information about the plot was revealed slowly during the film and that there were things we were contemplating even after the film ended, are what kept the viewers engaged throughout. We left the open-air theater entertained! And I will gladly watch it again.
